Finals spots secured, Sharks take fourth

AFTER the final round of the Northern Premier League final placing are secured with Somerset Sharks replacing Burnie United in fourth spot the only change from last week.

The Ulverstone Reds finished their season on a high, being undefeated in their last four matches, after they impressively defeated the Northern Ranger 2-1 on Saturday night.

The Devonport Strikers never let Burnie United into the match, taking the points and increasing their winning margin at the top of the ladder to 14 points.

United's loss enabled the Somerset Sharks to finish in the top four after they scored a 2-1 triumph over Riverside Olympic.

In the derby between City and Knights it was City who took the three points as it defeated the Prospect Knights 4-2.

Ulverstone finished its season on a winning note overcoming second placed Northern Rangers in a hard fought victory at the NTCA ground.

The Reds were the first to score through striker Richard Bidwell, when he turned his marker and beat the Rangers keeper.

Ulverstone's keeper Chris Smith was dealt his marching orders midway through the first half after his last man tackle on the Rangers striker.

Ulverstone was under pressure right from the restart and only managed to hold the Northern Rangers out until the 60th minute when a shot was fired into the back of the visitors net.

With the scores locked at 1-1 the tension built for both sides as chances went begging.

Ulverstone's coach Kim Rigby's late changes to push an extra player up front and bring on two young substitutes proved to be a match winner as 16-year-old Andy Compagne chipped Rangers keeper five minutes from the final whistle to give Ulverstone a gallant win.

At Windsor Park, the Somerset Sharks took away the three points which was enough to see them take fourth spot.

Although the Sharks missed opportunities they managed to find the back of the net twice and keep Olympic to only one goal.

The Devonport Strikers dominated the majority of the play against Burnie at Valley Road preventing United from a top four finish.

The Strikers however, moved more than four games clear at the top as their closest rivals Rangers and Knights were defeated.

Chris McKenna led from the front adding another two goals to his tally which is enough to take the goal scoring award and it is hoped that he can perform as well next week at the Strikers Statewide Cup match against South Hobart.
