Real sport shouldn't need make-up

26/08/2008 10:45:00 AM
WOULD someone please tell me which Olympic sport requires its participants to wear make-up?

The answer, of course, is rhythmic gymnastics.

The competitors don't strictly have to wear make-up, but if they don't, they won't score as highly.

But it begs the question how many other sports require their participants to wear make-up.

It also raises the question of whether or not they are indeed real sports and whether they should be in the Olympics.

Don't get me wrong, the skills of those who perform at the elite level are to be admired, but should it be in the Olympic arena?

The Olympic motto translates to "stronger, faster, higher".

Call me a sporting purist, but I reckon a sport is something where there's a winner who scores the most points, is the first across the line, or throws something or jumps higher or longer than anyone else.

In other words, something where there is a clear-cut winner that is not open to interpretation by judges determining things such as "artistic merit".

On that basis, baseball and softball should not be getting the chop from the Olympics.

Maybe rhythmic gymnastics and synchronised swimming should be going instead.

Thankfully, one thing we can be sure of is Channel Seven won't be the Australian broadcaster in London in 2012.

Just like our national Olympic team, Seven's coverage was below par when compared to Athens four years ago.

And we should have expected better, given there is only a two-hour time difference between here and Beijing.

Sure, we all like seeing Aussie gold in the pool and elsewhere, but even I get bored with it when it's been replayed 17 times on the same day.

I could fill several columns of what was ordinary about the supposedly "live" coverage, but I won't right now.

But I will say, thank goodness for ABC Radio.

As for our athletes - simply brilliant again for a small country of 22 million people, the only downside being the Poms got more gold medals than us.

But if ever we needed an incentive to fire up our sports stars for the next Olympics, then I reckon that's it.

Finally, I'm glad it's all over and I can go to bed before 2am again.

For a sporting tragic like me, the Olympics almost straight after the Tour de France has had me looking through square and bloodshot eyes for the past month, so an early night will be nice.

Hang on - did I hear someone say there's a Formula One race on TV at 1.30am tomorrow?
