DEVONPORT motorcycle racer Brad Wootton will be chasing his first podium finish in a national series on his home circuit when he competes in the support program for this weekend's round six of the Australian Superbike Championships at the Symmons Plains International Raceway.
Wootton, 27, is 12th in the Australian Superstock Championship in his first year attempting the full series.
Last year he competed in selected rounds and despite several crashes and mechanical dramas, he was not deterred from a full-on assault on the seven-round series this year.
His results this season have included a fifth at Phillip Island (Vic) and top 10 finishes in the Queensland and South Australian rounds.
"And so far I haven't fallen off all season," Wootton said.
"I had some rotten luck last year, but thankfully now that all seems to be behind me," he said.
Wootton recorded two sixth places and crashed in the final heat of last year's Symmons Plains round, but is hoping to better his result this weekend.
"I've definitely got the speed and home track advantage for a podium finish," he said.
"Last year was a very steep learning curve, for sure - even though my speed was good, the results weren't there and I was starting to gain a reputation as a crasher."
"As the old saying goes, to finish first, first you have to finish."
Wootton said the racing in his class was now more intense than last season.
Wootton, who races a Suzuki GSX-R600 under the Team Suzuki Support Rider banner, as well as support from North-West Motorcycles at Ulverstone, is eying off some strong results to leapfrog his way in the championship standings.
But Wootton won't be the only rider with home track support and is one of nine Tasmanian riders in his class.
Joining him on the track for the Tasmanian round will be Latrobe's James Abey, on a Honda CBR600 and Melrose rider Michael Smith on a Yamaha R6, as well as six Launceston riders.
The superstock class will have one race on the support program on Saturday and two races on Sunday.
