 Spreyton a wash-out

Spreyton a wash-out

13/08/2008 5:00:00 AM
THIS Sunday's thoroughbred racing program scheduled for Spreyton Park Raceway has been cancelled due to poor track conditions.

The course received more than 26mm of rain over the weekend and an inspection by TOTE Tasmania officials on Monday revealed excessive water in four places on the track, making it unsafe for racing.

The ill-fated meeting is the second Spreyton meeting cancelled in a month, while a meeting was also abandoned in May after heavy rain and splashed-up mud made vision impossible for jockeys.

The Devonport Racing Club has floated the idea of a $5 million redevelopment to incorporate an all-weather synthetic surface, but no funding is currently available.

Spreyton has been placed under extra load this winter, hosting an additional five meetings transferred from the Mowbray course in Launceston, which is currently undergoing a major $10 million redevelopment.

DRC secretary Phillip Swinton said Spreyton would normally take a break between early June and early September.

"We were hopeful the weather pattern this winter would have been kind enough to let us get away with it (the extra meetings), but it wasn't," he said.

"If it had been last year, we would have got away with it, because we had a much drier winter."

The next Spreyton meeting will now be held on September 7.

Last month's cancelled Spreyton meeting was transferred to Elwick (Hobart), but the South has also received heavy rain and is deemed unsuitable for racing this weekend too, meaning the Spreyton program will not be transferred.

This has angered some trainers and owners, with no thoroughbred racing at all in Tasmania this week.

Extra races have been added to Saturday's twilight harness racing meeting in Hobart to cater for punters.
