Thoroughbred Breeders Tasmania vice-president Graeme McCulloch said the concerns were echoed by those involved in thoroughbred breeding.

"The success of the Magic Millions sale and recent investment in breeding infrastructure in Tasmania is threatened by the lack of opportunities to get the produce to the race track," he said.

"The quality of Tasmanian racing and breeding stock has been steadily improving over the past four years and this, along with the advent of better stakes, has attracted many new participants to this valuable Tasmanian industry.

"It has also meant that many owners, trainers and breeders have expanded their businesses to accommodate demand.

"The issue of there being an insufficient number of race meetings has been magnified by the closure of Tasman Park for major renovations and a recent spate of bad weather.

"This is to be an ongoing issue for Tasmania as other tracks are progressively renovated."

The TBT said there needs to be immediate talks at all levels to create a short-term solution and long-term planning to alleviate the problem in the future.

McCulloch said TBT sees the breeding industry as a valuable long-term asset for Tasmania and joins with owners and trainers in seeking solutions to the plight that has the ability to devastate "this buoyant part of the economy".

Secretary of the Jockeys' Association, Kevin Ring, said they also fully support the request for more meetings.

He said a fuller schedule would help alleviate the jockey shortage.

The shortage of starters in the cups last season could be put down to a lack of meetings, Ring said.

Without a full season of racing, the stayers were not up to running the cups, he said.
