Great win for young NW team

26/08/2008 10:44:00 AM
THE young Golf North West team had a great win in the Thyne Trophy which was played in excellent conditions at Burnie Golf Club over the weekend.

Northern clubs dominated the state pennant finals and Northern Tasmania would have been expected to be the toughest hurdle for the defending champions.

Meeting North first up, North- West looked to be in a strong position over its front nine holes with the top order players leading their opponents.

Ryan McCarthy went on to a strong 5/4 win over John Cassidy, Stuart Gray was solid against Kalem Richardson winning 3/2 and James Hyland came from behind to win 2/1.

Mitchell Smith also fought back only to lose the last hole to an unexpected putt, squaring the game and the overall contest.

Craig Hancock struggled with the putter, losing narrowly to Adam Ring while Neville Hogan also had a close game against Mike Leedham.

Heath Middap could only square the last hole to finish one down.

Southern Metropolitan had a 4/3 win against Southern Country to lead the competition.

Most of the games were won comfortably.

Competition wasn't as close on Sunday with Northern Tasmania defeating Southern Country 6/1.

Golf North West had a 5/2 morning win over Metropolitan with McCarthy winning a great tussle over state captain, Mark Schulze.

Jason Rubock squared his game after being brought in to the team to replace the injured Jason Reynolds.

After Metro beat North 5/2 in the afternoon round, Golf North West only had to win against Southern Country to secure the trophy.

However, they did it in style with a great 6/1 result.

McCarthy had another big result, winning 7/6 and Neville Hogan and Heath Middap had their first wins.

Hancock, Gray, and Smith all won while Hyland had his first loss of the weekend.

Spectators were able to witness some great golf and Burnie Golf Club is to be congratulated for its hospitality.

Sheffield struggled in pennant this year and in hindsight should have been in a lower division.

However, its players were not known when the roster was drawn up and it battled the season out and got a late win that was somewhat unexpected.

Thirlstane was very competitive in division four and narrowly missed the final but struggled to keep pace in division five.

A narrow away loss to Stanley and a loss at home to Wynyard in the first round cost it a finals spot.

Port Sorell had a good season in a very close division three.

After a slow start it rallied and even looked an outside chance for the final.

Its top order was its strength but it needed to win a few more games in the lower order to be a real threat.
