Dedication earns Armstrong nomination

24/07/2008 10:16:00 AM
BURNIE basketballer Sam Armstrong recently joined a rather unique club when he played his 300th game in the South East Australian Basketball League (SEABL).

Armstrong, 30, is captain of the Searson Buck North-West Thunder and only the fourth player from the North-West Coast to join the elite 300-game club.

This makes him a worthy nomination for The Advocate- Motors Sports Star of the Year Award.

But while 300 games is impressive, the Thunder skipper will be hoping his tally at the end of the season is at least 306 games.

If it is, it will mean Armstrong and the Thunder will have won the SEABL East Conference grand final and beaten the South Conference premiers for the league championship.

And, after finishing second on the East Conference ladder at the end of the season and facing The Knox Raiders in the second semi-final in Melbourne this Saturday night, the Thunder is looking a chance to achieve finals glory.

Since the SEABL started in 1981, only 14 players have achieved more than 300 games.

The four North-West Coasters include Armstrong's brother Ben Armstrong, Ben Murfet and Dave Biwer, who also played part of his SEABL career with the Hobart Chargers.

While Armstrong would be hard pressed to remember how many games he has won or lost in his past 301 SEABL matches, one he can remember vividly was the Thunder's 2004 SEABL South Conference premiership victory.

Hopefully, his finals experience will be a driving force towards success in this year's finals series.

Armstrong also took on a new role this year in NWBU basketball, where he was playing coach of Smithton after many years playing alongside his brother at Wynyard.

In his first year as coach Armstrong led the Saints to a finals berth, unfortunately dropping out in the first week after losing to Devonport last week.

If you know someone who has achieved something significant on the state, national or international sporting stage, while based on the North-West Coast, then nominate them for The Advocate-Motors Sports Star of the Year Award by sending details to sport@theadvocate.com.au

The award runs for 52 weeks, with the overall winner announced at a gala dinner in July.
