Right ingredients for a spectator-friendly finals series

25/08/2008 10:41:00 AM
THIS NTFL finals series seems to have it all. On the weekend there was a close match between Coastal rivals in the Ulverstone and Burnie game, watched by a crowd of more than 1300.

There was also an astonishing result and a strange game in the Launceston derby between North and South, with South Launceston ending up the winner by a considerable margin despite not kicking a goal in the first term, in front of more than 1000 spectators. There was even some controversy as the first quarter at Youngtown was mis-timed, and four-and-a-half minutes of play were lost.

The way the wins and losses fell on the weekend has set up the best possible scenarios for next weekend's two semi-finals.

The rematch between Launceston and Burnie is a match made in heaven and should attract a large crowd at Windsor Park as the Blues seek to assert their authority over the only side that has beaten them all season.

The Dockers, with some valuable finals experience under their belts, will be out to prove themselves and book a week off and a spot in the grand final in the shortest way possible.

In the cut-throat semi- final, Ulverstone hosts South Launceston, which made a 50-point turnaround and kept Ulverstone to one goal in the second half last time the sides met.

The Robins, who usually thrive on finals pressure, let Burnie in this weekend and will be desperate to have a crack at the preliminary final - although whether they would prefer to face Launceston or Burnie in that is debatable.

Any team is still in with a chance at making the big game.
