THE six Coastal NTFL football clubs not invited to participate in AFL Tasmania's proposed Tasmanian State League (TSL) for next year, have thrown their unequivocal support behind the NTFL for at least the next three years.
Club presidents and NTFL delegates from East Devonport, Latrobe, Ulverstone, Penguin, Wynyard and Smithton met at Wynyard on Tuesday night and agreed to support the NTFL in whatever form it took next year.
NTFL clubs Burnie, Devonport, Launceston, South Launceston and the Northern Bombers have been invited to join the proposed 10-team TSL competition next year which, if it goes ahead, would leave the NTFL with a six-team Coastal-based competition.
Tuesday night's meeting drew up a "statement of intent", which declared a unanimous intention for the six clubs to remain in either the NTFL in its present form (if the State League does not go ahead next year), or a revamped North-West based competition.
"All clubs are prepared to commit to the statement of intent for a minimum of three years," the statement read.
"All clubs are also unanimous in their support for their respective clubs to play in the highest possible level of competition."
The document was delivered to the NTFL yesterday morning.
Wynyard delegate Colin Robertson said clubs present at Tuesday night's meeting were not interested in a two-tier NTFL competition.
The two-tier competition has been mooted as one option being considered by a special working party established by the NTFL to look at likely competition structures next year.
The working party is expected to table its report on August 5.
NTFL general manager Ian Wotherspoon said yesterday the expression of total loyalty from the six Coastal clubs was very pleasing.
"It would be nice if all NTFL clubs could make a similar commitment," Wotherspoon said.
The NTFL has given all clubs until August 15 to register for next year's competition.
The deadline for acceptance, or otherwise, of the proposed State League is September 23.
