ULVERSTONE folk are even angrier about age pension rates than Burnie people, according to a man who collected 2670 signatures to take the pension fight to Canberra.
"(The mood at) Ulverstone was terrible," Burnie carer Alan Moret said last week after finishing his signature gathering exercise in Burnie, Ulverstone and Wynyard.
"The mood was angrier at Ulverstone, especially with the pensioners.
"Some are doing all right, some are not and most are struggling."
Liberal Senator Stephen Parry will take the petition to parliament.
While wanting the Rudd government to significantly lift age pension rates, Mr Moret did not see a bright long- term future for the pension.
"I think eventually the age pension will disappear.
"People will have to put money by for their retirement more."
The Rudd government is having a pension review as part of a wider inquiry into the tax system.
A pension review background paper was released a few weeks ago.
Braddon Labor MHR Sid Sidebottom said: "This (tax and welfare system) inquiry will investigate fully the best possible way to index the aged pension to help give long-term financial security to pensioners.
"As stated by Federal Minister for Community Services Jenny Macklin last week, the recommendations of this inquiry will be responded to quickly in February 2009.
"This is a complex issue, and we want to get it right.
"It would be very irresponsible to make hasty decisions about this."
He said he would encourage Mr Moret and seniors to make written submissions to the pension review.
Submissions can be made by emailing pensionreview@ nationalmailing.com.au or by post to Pension Review Submissions, Reply Paid 7101, Canberra BC, ACT 2610.
