Dancing into children's hearts

LIKE all grandmothers, Rosemary Mastnak wanted to create happy memories for her granddaughter Anya.

These memories became a book, which was launched in Devonport on Tuesday.

Dancing with Grandma was based on her own experiences as a grandmother.

Once, when she was visiting, Anya dressed as a princess and started dancing with her grandmother.

Mrs Mastnak said the look on her face was wonderful.

Sometime later Mrs Mastnak was ill and could not paint as she usually did. She drew instead.

She drew many pictures of Anya and herself dancing and then looked to photocopy them to turn it into a book for her.

But a friend who knew a publisher saw it and insisted on passing it on.

It has taken a few years but the book is now out and Anya is pleased to be the star.

"She loves her book, in fact she has said `when a book week comes I'm going to go dressed as myself and take my book'," Mrs Mastnak said.

Mrs Mastnak said she was helped by a fantastic editor who had many ideas to add.

Unfortunately this meant more work for her, including turning the drawings into watercolours.

But it was all worth it.

There were many children at the two launches at the Devonport Library yesterday.

There is a song in the book and the children joined in singing it.

"We all sang and danced and fell on the ground," she said.
