PENGUIN teenager and motocross champion Kurt White will hang up his helmet after a second serious head injury.

The 15-year-old overshot a corner while competing in the Tasmanian Endurance Riders' Club event at Granville Harbour on March 9, sustaining serious eye and head injuries.

He suffered a concussion close to the site where a brain tumour was removed six years ago - only discovered after falling from his bike in the Tasmanian Motocross Championships.

The tumour had been discovered by a precautionary scan, potentially saving his life.

But now his doctors have laid down the law: no more racing.

"I can ride, just not race. I'm a bit upset about it," Kurt, who has been racing for 10 years, said.

"I was thinking about racing go-karts, the doctor said I'm allowed to race go-karts. You can't get hurt as much."

Kurt was airlifted to the Royal Hobart Hospital in the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, in a serious condition, after his most recent injury.

He was released after a week, during which time he was seriously ill with concussion, vomiting, and serious swelling around his left eye.

Kurt returned to hospital last Wednesday to have an operation on his broken eye socket.

"He had a piece of wood come through his goggles and hit him right around his left eye," Kurt's father Bevan said.

"His eye opened up on Saturday. He's got to go back on Thursday and have the stitches taken out."

Mr White said according to doctors, Kurt had no brain damage and no long-term eye damage.

"They said he can't have any more concussions. It could be real serious," Mr White said.
